Chossing Acoustic Baffles or Sound Baffles in Australia

Acoustic Baffles, or Sound Baffles, are terms used to describe sound absorbing panels that are usually hung vertically from ceilings or overhead structures. When hung this way, both sides of the panels are exposed to minimise the flow of sound waves. For this reason, Acoustic Baffles are potentially far more effective that single – sided panels that are fixed flush to walls or ceilings.

Vertically hung Acoustic Baffles Ceiling will of course take up more overhead space than conventional acoustic ceiling panels, but their extra sound absorbing efficiency makes them ideal for large, noisy open spaces such as workshops, food halls, exhibition halls, and similar open plan areas. They are also particularly useful for ‘masking’ exposed building services such as air conditioning ductwork and sprinkler systems, where suspended ceilings have not been installed.

SONTEXT PTY LTD manufactures and supplies Acoustic Baffles under the company’s own brand name SONOBAFFLES™. Sonobaffles can be custom-made in dimensions to suit design requirements on any project. Finishes include a huge range of fabric colours and patterns.

Sonobaffles Acoustic Baffles function in the same way as conventional wall and fabric acoustic panels, that is, they absorb reverberation and reflected sound waves, resulting in less background noise and clearer speech quality. As a result such a space becomes a more comfortable environment for occupants.

Sonobaffles have been fully tested for sound absorption, so acoustic performance is predictable. Sontext can also provide advice on installation methods and fixing systems.

Acoustic Panels for Commercial Interiors

Sound absorbing Acoustic Panels are commonly installed in ‘noisy’ commercial interior spaces to absorb reverberation, or unwanted sound. The main purpose these panels is to remove reflected sound waves that would otherwise cause communication and sound quality problems. The resulting benefit for room occupants is the provision of a more pleasant working or listening environment.

Acoustic Panels can be installed on available space on walls or on ceilings. If specified, manufactured and installed correctly, their effectiveness at absorbing sound is now well established. However, it is equally important to ensure that Acoustic Wall Panels or Acoustic Ceiling Panels “fit in” with existing interior colour schemes and decor.  This can be particularly important when panels are to be installed in an existing space. To be effective, it’s usual to cover 30 – 40% of an interior; either blank, reflective walls or ceiling surfaces. Therefore, the choice of surface colour or pattern on the panels can have a significant effect on the interior decor of a space. Commercial interior spaces such as open-plan offices or meeting rooms usually require a more “serious” approach to decor in comparison to, for example, public spaces like restaurants and entertainment facilities.

The images show that Acoustic Wall Panels and Acoustic Ceiling Panels can be used in an unobtrusive way in existing commercial interior spaces. In both instances shown, large areas of otherwise reflective surface have been covered with sound absorbing panels without interfering with services (such as lighting) and enabling the acoustic panels to blend in with the look and feel of these workspaces, without overwhelming them.

Australian acoustic panel manufacturer Sontext Pty Ltd supplied Serenity Fabric Acoustic Celling Panels for both projects. In both cases, Sontext was able to assist the clients with a choice of suitable acoustic facing fabrics from the huge range available on the market. Sontext also supplies ART Panels, through its ability to print commercial company logos onto the face of fabric faced panels. Sontext High Performance Acoustic Baffles

Noise pollution is a problem shared by all modern cities. Motor vehicles, industrial machines, planes, trains, construction works, music performance etc, all contribute to noise pollution. However, the real problem is that in cities we all live quite close together, and one person's noise problem may be another's pleasure. Not all sound is "noise" and many interior spaces in residential and commercial properties suffer from reverberation, or echo, which can cause pleasant sounds (like music, speech, etc) to be distorted. Reverberation problems can occur when sound waves are reflected off hard surfaces such as glass or concrete materials. Background noise does not have to be loud to cause irritation. Continuous exposure can even cause loss of productivity in the workplace, or hearing loss, besides producing stress. Sound absorbing panels are designed to minimise reverberation problems in interior spaces.

Acoustic Panels can be used to absorb background noise in conventional interior spaces such as offices, classrooms, halls, and most occupied public spaces, by easily attaching the panels to existing wall and ceiling linings like brick or plaster.. However, some building interiors, like workshops and machine shops for example, are not constructed with wall linings, so acoustic panels may need to be installed to the roof or the structural members. Spaces with these types of functions also have particular sound problems, such as heavy machinery, running motors, etc, that require very high performance sound absorbers.
Sontext has experience in successfully treating noise problems in industrial applications with its range of Serenity Acoustic Baffles Ceiling Panels.
Sontext is a well-known manufacturer and supplier of acoustic panels for most interior sound problems.
